What would you recommend for a first phone?

I am in my early teens and have never had a cellphone before. I think from a social standpoint, I would need texting but people can just call me. This is mainly for when I'm out with friends and I need to call my parents to say where I am. If I were to get texting what would you recommend? Nothing too expensive please!
