Can Apple repair water damage of an iPod Touch?

Water damage isn't covered under your Apple warranty so they won't even attempt to fix it. When I took my iPod touch into the Apple store after my son decided to see if it would swim, they told me I had to buy a new one but they could give me 10% off if I left the old one there.
