Please help!My Bf broke d relation due to family reasons. Now asks for being friends. Is it worth going for?

Hey, i had this strong relationship with my boyfriend for 5 long years. he told his family, i used to visit them, stay with them for days, they were cool with it..they agreed for me..called my mom to fix the relation to get me engaged with him. His family is very traditional, but pretend that they are very modern people,and since I am an atheist and did not approve for Hindu rituals, i though that wont be a problem since they knew this fact about me. But then gradually, my bf stopped talking to me and kept aloof. I doubted and asked him then he said that his family thinks that this is not going to work.He was even scared of calling me and telling me that He could not stand for our relation when his mother was saying awful things about me. And when my mother called her up to ask that what has happened, his mother rudely said that since d girl( Me) don't have a father and is from different culture and has such non traditional beliefs, we can not marry our boy to her. Although my bf kept supporting his family and kept saying that his family cares for me that's why dey broke d relation that too after establishing such a strong bond with me. I was absolutely devastated. He showed up to me finally after 3 weeks, and said that it isnt his fault and he feels sorry that I got hurt.and he wants to maintain a friendship. I dont know what to do??. Should I make him suffer for his weakness and not taking a stand against something wrong or should forgive him????..please help me...
